It was once said that the eyes are the windows to our soul. Therefore a pair of good and healthy eyes shows that our body is in perfect condition as a whole. At least that is what people will perceive. For one thing we can tell how others are feeling just by looking at their eyes. Droopy eyes tell us that person is lacking sleep. Eyes with dark circles tell us the person needs to take a break and relax. But a pair of red shot eyes, that can mean a lot of things. What all of these point to is the importance of keeping our eyes healthy. And that is actually easy to do even by using some eye exercises.

Did you ever imagine how it would be like not have the ability to see? We all know what blind people are like but we do not have the slightest idea what they are going through or what they are feeling because of their blindness. That is why we should feel at least very blessed that we can see and that there is nothing wrong with our eyes, at least not enough to make us become disabled persons. That is why it is important that we should always take good care of our eyesight.

So if you want to maintain your healthy eyes, here are some tips that you can follow.

One of the best vitamins that you should always take is vitamin A. If you have heard of night blindness, that is just among the eye conditions that can be avoided if the body has adequate vitamin A supply. For this to happen you should eat more carrots, sweet potatoes and celery which are rich in this vitamin. However, if for some reason you cannot eat foods high in vitamin A, there will always be supplements that you can take and these come cheap.

Green vegetables are always the most healthiest foods that you can eat and this is also true to maintain our eyes. Vegetables such as broccoli, green beans, spinach and others are rich in antioxidants which are great in fighting the free radicals that cause havoc to our cells, including those in our eyes. Eye conditions like cataract and macular degeneration can then be avoided if only we eat more of these green vegetables.

There are also some minerals that are also good in fighting off the free radicals and selenium and zinc are among the top. Great sources for these minerals are tuna, milk, rice and nuts. Again, if you do not have access to foods rich in selenium and zinc, you can always take supplements.

When you are working for a long period of time, take a little time off for your eyes. It is also better if you can do an eye exercise after a few minutes just to avoid getting eye strain. You can move your eyes from top to bottom repeatedly or just stare at a relaxing color or view. This will also help you release stress from the daily grinds of your work.

And lastly, never forget to take a break when you need it. Relax your eyes every now and then. If you are doing a lot of reading or using the computer, sit back and close your eyes for a couple of minutes. While it might just be an extremely short break, your eyes will get fully relaxed and prepare you for the longer hours of work ahead.
